So this last week I had a kind of major computer problem and had to buy a new machine. A tech friend who helps me with these matters said it’s best not to do a migration as you may end up transferring the problem over to the new guy. Consequently I’ve spent each day trying to get every app, instrument and plugin installed from the distributor website to my new studio computer. !!!
I honestly wouldn’t wish this on anyone. For this A.D.D. brain i’m ready to punch the sky when I walk out of here each evening.

In the course of using Pro Tools on Macs since 1996 I’ve only had to do a migration once. That was by choice as I switched from mechanical drives to solid state. It’s a scary process nonetheless, but I figured it would be easier than moving umpteen licenses.
that’s the dirty little secret they forget to tell us. we usually get a new computer out of necessity, not out of choice. by doing a migration you’re essentially moving any bugs you have over to the brand new machine.
Ugh… what a drag. And not a drop and drag, just a complete hassle. Best of luck on the move. Something to be said for the old analog gear or standalone digital workstations. I have a digital Roland machine I use to demo fast and dump into a daw and under-dub… mainly because the transport is as easy as a tape recorder, with simple foot switch punch in-out. Still useful. I commend you on making the transition to daw… learning it and growing it.. the tecjnology and it’s use is an education in and of itself. I’ve tried but don’t have much patience to learn the daw but it’s now necessary in today’s environments. You almost have to put the songwriting mantle down and study and learn to be an engineer, not just a musician. I’d rather play and write than engineer. You’ve worked to be an incredible engineer, because the sounds you get are fabulous. I’d enjoy hearing your thoughts on the learning curve and transition from analog to daw and how you use your daw as a tool to spark creativity.. speed recording along, like looping and taking multiple passes instead of stop and start analog. Has becoming an engineer/artist helped in your own growth?
Ugh I wouldn’t wish computer problems on my worst enemy. It takes focus and when I’m staring down from the second floor at a slip n’ slide my attention goes there. I must slide on it.
