America and her major cities have a diverse amount of status. The tents lined up on sidewalks throughout most of Los Angeles can be heart-wrenching. Their own system of prison rules and hierarchy are in place. Terrifying and right there in plain sight. No mental institutions or rehabilitation centers, just the street.
Middle class homes that were once in the mid 200k’s, now over 1MM, mostly with people who’d love to cash out but would have to leave the state to do it. Lots of stress here. It was easier being in the middle.
Then the rich and uber rich, who have an endless supply of f*ck-you money and are uniquely unqualified to give an opinion about much of anything real-life, as their gilded cage provides a limited view. They shop the high end Italian/French brands of clothing, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus for gadgets and glory. And for the fridge it’s Erewhon in Calabasas, where the latter I now frequent for lunch, simply because it’s the best eats. But there’s a few things you notice about Erewhon and it’s customers.
First, the incredible amount of healthy and organic selection, organized with such precision and meticulous care that it’s almost too pretty to be a market. It’s stacked with elves, furiously working the entire perimeter to bring out the very best natural food has to offer, cooked dishes, salads, at least a half dozen or more employees behind the smoothie bar concocting all kinds of fruit & vegetable drinks, coffees, pastries etc. Vitamin and herbal specialists, butchers and produce handlers… It’s like a world of its own.
Then the prices. One hand-basket full is at least 200.00. ouch … but my motto this year has been ‘food is the new European vacation’.
And there’s a negative side. The clientele are upper demo. New millennial yuppies. They come in Range Rovers, BMW’s, Bentleys and Mercedes. They wear oversized sweats, yoga pants, designer sneakers and sunglasses, looking ho-hum hungover and being day-trained privately by a Kardashian sister on how to perfect a ‘California smug chic’. You can pick them out before they even reach their 100k+ cars. They exude a sort of look that says “So I’m rich, but I’m bored. Please notice me”.
Contrast this with my walk today (picture above)
I was thinking this might be the most beautiful place in the world. It’s in a part of LA that’s either sneered at, or at best dismissed by the city. But today I imagined it on a postcard. Rocks abound. Trails, railroad tracks, freeway underpasses, kids laughing, birds singing, sun shining in December, I mean… it’s a little slice of heaven, honestly. To add to that, I’ve had some sort of time travel childlike regression, placing coins on the tracks to flatten them while my dog waits like a loyal girlfriend yards away. At first it was to make guitar picks, but honestly it just brings me some oddly satisfying joy. Like a kid. Like if I were on my death bed I doubt I’d regret not taking another meeting to make more money, but I guarantee you I’ll be happy I took this time for myself, my dog.
Anyway, as I was walking and taking it in I thought to myself, If this were Italy, we’d see a picture of it on a postcard and our dreams would run away with us. We’d log on to Expedia and start doing the math.
Because the grass is always greener. Yet everywhere in the U.S., from the naked winter trees of the northeast and midwest down to the shores of the Gulf Coast and Florida. From the mountains of Colorado and Utah to the vast desert of California, Nevada and into Mexico, it’s all rugged beauty. How often do we notice it as the gift it is?
While our minds are on our work, our goals, 401k’s, health benefits, (misnomer) our kids, what we leave behind, who said what, politics… a million and one things. While are minds are doing all this, we’re not present. We don’t notice the obvious.
How many times have you driven home from wherever, and realized you can’t even recall getting there? You were somewhere else.
But would we notice this beauty around us if it were stripped away? Wiped clean like a Twilight Zone episode… barren with no green life or sunshine… no squirrels or rabbits, no birds. You know we would, in a heartbeat yes.
I encourage each and every one of you over the holidays, myself included to step outside, walk around, take it in and soak it up… find the postcard. It’s everywhere, and you don’t have to fly somewhere and show & tell it on Instagram to feel the joy. You just have to turn off the mental noise and notice that it’s there. And it’s been there, waiting for you.
Love and Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays to all ❤️
Jude

A wonderful idea, Jude! I will have the kids put their hand up in a half square! They will think it is “super cool” and it will make me smile! 🙂 Thank you so.much for the incredible idea!!
Third time’s a charm !
Zinc?
So glad to hear that those Midwest roots still stick. We don’t have the big city lights, or the Bentleys outside the store, so I think it’s just a tad easier to spot the postcards here. Nice to know that Ellay (I hope you get that one) hasn’t superimposed itself to where you can’t value the beauty of simplicity and the glory of our natural surroundings. Always appreciate your insightful reflections. I’m enjoying my coffee meet ups with Tom and Beth. We catch up on each other’s lives (your name comes up from time to time) and kick around the state of things in general. We always have an extra seat at our table (in case you get the urge to look at the Mississippi). Wishing you a blessed and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
The postcards of back home live in my mind forever. A strangely enough I think of places like Butterworth Park, where in reality I spent little time… but it was always beautiful especially in the fall.
Love to you and yours Kim, Merry Christmas ❤️
Yes , lots of POSTCARDS out there, everyday to be seen and immerse yourself in , just like this post has a song written into somewhere .
Yes everyday is a good day , some better than others , but ALL good days . Just turning 61 and to see it is a blessing , each day for me is bonus time for the last 3 years , by the grace of God srill here , enjoying life , family , and friends.
Yes we are can all get caught in the trap of working and getting derailed from whats important , well my goal has been to work harder to be present in everyone’s life I love and care for , always trying to be a better , husband , father , and friend , yes Jude everyone needs to step outside , walk around , and yes take it in , take it all in , be present and part of that beautiful postcard wherever it maybe , notice it’s there , and enjoy it , and you will realize , life is good.
Merry Christmas and a Happy , Healthy New Year to everyone , I for one am looking forward to more bonus time.
Peace
Another big yes! Merry Christmas Angelo!
Mate, it’s like you are an authenticity fountain. I appreciate it deeply, selfishly. IRL I have been blessed to live in “fly over” Indiana and can walk to 3 separate nature preserves within 2 miles. Please don’t tell the other Cali folks or you’ll come “Yellowstone” the place. I’m trusting you on this one.
Something has shifted in life and it’s probably due to age, but than you Andrew. I’ve not seen Yellowstone yet but plan to watch it soon 🙂 Merry Christmas!
“Find the postcard” is great advice, thanks

Ironically, just had this same sort of experience. Did a show at the Natchitoches Christmas Festival of Lights this past Saturday. Natchitoches is about two hours from home so decided to drive there with my wife instead of going on the bus. We had a great show and it was very fitting to be the last of the year. Natchitoches is where the movie Steel Magnolias was filmed. It’s one of my wife’s favorite movies so of course we stuck around Sunday to search out where certain scenes were filmed. While that was mildly entertaining, my great takeaway from the day was the actual beauty and sort of back in time feeling of the town and surrounding area. The final stop was about a 20 minute drive from the town to the church where the wedding scene was filmed. The drive there was beautiful. The back in time scenery really kicked in there. Lots of farm land with huge plantation houses and of course the barely standing shotgun houses. At times it was a bit hard to not think about some of the likely horrors that some people went through. But, in the moment the memories of the festive show and the surrounding beauty won out. It was the first time in a long time that I did take a moment and soak it all in , breathe in the clean crisp air and truly appreciated what we have right here in our own backyard. Wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a happy holiday season! As Elvis sang, Santy Claus is back in town. 🎄
I know exactly what you mean Chris. I’d get that feeling visiting the grandparents in a town called Vevay, Indiana. It was like going back in time to the 1800’s. Little House On The Prairie vibes. Merry Christmas!
lol, I remember doing that with coins too back in the day. Really digging on the light years away song! Thanks for sharing all your talent with us… Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
❤️
Thanks for the reminder. I live in East Tennessee and get to see beauty everyday. I do take it for granted sometimes. People drive hours to come here and admire the changing leaves in the fall but it’s beautiful all year.
Merry Christmas to you, your family and all your fans.

As usual your post had me laughing ( the copper pics ! ) and thoughtful,…grateful I live where I do . (Driving home the other night I took the back road & slowed to give way to multiple kangaroos, a wombat , two rabbits and all while the sun dappled through the trees… beautiful) but I always have been grateful for where I live, even more so now
May you & dog enjoy many blissful walks and wishing for you and yours, a very blessed Christmas and beyond. ♥️🥳
And it’s not even copper! Probably the last worthwhile thing you can actually do with a penny…
Australia is still in my memory from the 2 times I’ve been there. Just the most insanely beautiful place.
Merry Christmas down under!
I walk my dog several times a day and I have definitely forgotten to look for the postcard… Thanks for the reminder and merry Christmas to you and your family Jude.

For over 10 years now, I walk the adjacent golf course every morning. Some mornings it is more difficult to get my ass out there, but it is always good to have mushed my way through. I don’t have any railroad tracks to entertain my wandering mind but finding “lost” golf balls is a strangely satisfying endevour. I have no use for the myriad of these orbs I collect. I give away buckets to anyone that wants them, even take them to the clubhouse for the classes they teach to the young future golfers.
Not being a religious person, I still find these walks a spiritual time where I find myself mulling many of life’s offerings. Just to get away from the daily drone of BS can afford a relaxing moment in time alone.
Those mornings where it is difficult to get out sometimes turn into an extra long trek through my own thoughts.
Happy trails.
Kindred spirits!
Love this!! I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. Iets my mind dust the cobwebs off and kick in to deep thinking mode. I appreciate you and the wonderful art and inner thoughts that you share with all of us. This is a blessing and a gift.
Sending love and warm wishes to you and your family this holiday season Jude!! 🙏💝

What a beautiful Christmas gift, Jude! It has been my vow recently that if I can make it through 2024 (WORST year), I am going to start anew in 2025; and spending lots more time in the beautiful outdoors is going to be a big part of that renewal. Your beautiful writings have reminded me of how much I have missed in the beautiful, natural environment that I have right outside of my back door. 😁
I hope that you and your family have a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s; and may your 2025 be filled with love, good health, and many blessings!!!
❤️ Lynn
The consoling news is that you are not alone about 2024 Lynn. Things will get better this year. Do those tuning forks every morning and watch it align ❤️ Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas Jude!🎄🤘🏻

“I can still remember
Driving home in the driving rain
Past highway signs and Rock Island lines
California dreamin’
Oh, I’m right there now”…
‘Nuff said Jude….
Merry Christmas my friend

Your posts are so amazing! As a teacher, I am bound to do certain things a certain way. I changed course, still teach, but now I teach a high school life skills class to intellectually disabled, autistic and nonverbal kids. The structure of my class is very fluid. However, we go outside each day just to take it all in. The kids love it! I wish all teachers had this flexibility and all students could find the post card! Merry Christmas, Jude. Thank you for all of your wisdom and wonders!
wow! i think we all dream of giving ourselves the way you’re doing with the kids there. you’re blessed. hey maybe you can teach them to put their hands up in a half-square like directors do to find the backdrop for their scenes. a great way to find the postcard 🙂 Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas Jude! You are so right! It’s all around us if we take the time to shut all of the noise out! Gosh, I’m going to literally take a social media break and learn to be present again. What in the world did we all do b4 social media? We need to learn that again. I thought being locked inside when covid was going around would change things but it seems like it made social media speed up.
I’ve enjoyed reading your posts and just listened again to your song, “Time for Letting Go”..and will be taking your advice. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Thank you Angela, and It’s good to break when needed. we weren’t meant to be plugged in all the time right? Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas, Jude!!! Great post brother!!
