How To Really Help Independent Artists

People ask all the time how they can support my music and other artists like me. I always say ‘just enjoy it!’… but you know there is something you can do to help us who are kind of dismissed to the middle for whatever reasons… not on a major label, older than the mainstream public, not that well known etc.

Anytime you add a song to a playlist, it gets played more frequently. The more songs you add to playlists that play during parties or just on weekend listens, it gets streams where normally it wouldn’t.  You can get creative with it, adding songs that sound like they’re from other eras and just slipping them in, or if you have totally random playlists where they fit in, that’s good too.

Back in the 80’s and 90’s they had a term called ‘turntable hit’.  That was when a song was a legitimate hit at radio, but the artist didn’t become a star.  You could classify ‘Baby It’s Tonight’ as a turntable hit.  It was actually #4 on pop radio (R&R Magazine), but because Billboard Magazine tallied that number with actual sales, the song only made it to #16 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Many songs on Spotify get millions of streams and no one knows the artist because the songs were cleverly placed by a curator into a hot and trending playlist, alongside more popular artists, therefore riding the wake of songs that people actually tuned in for.

So, adding any of my songs, especially new ones like ‘Subliminal Seduction’, ‘New You-niverse’ or really anything from the albums ‘Coup De Main’ or ‘Coolerator’ really seriously helps with awareness and streams.  Putting them closer to the top helps even more.

My version of ‘I Only Have Eyes For You’ from Coolerator has, on it’s own gained momentum on Soundcloud with 375k streams.  Pretty successful when you consider most listeners on Soundcloud are into EDM and youthful pop.  It’s flattering to read all the mails I’ve gotten on this rendition of a song I loved… so this is another example that, if you add it to your playlists, it helps the song snowball into a more organic success.

THIS can really help… but whatever you do, enjoy it!

Cheers,
Jude

“We want to binge watch our TV shows and have the entire music world at our fingertips.”
Sad but true statement Jude , Im glad I experienced the era of going to the record store and buying a record from an artist you couldn’t wait to hear new music from, it was an event and you made a day of it , popping the stylus down listening to the record , reading the liner notes and lyrics , we become a society where Binge-watching offers a sense of escapism from lifes daily grind , and its the nee way to relax and unwind, the masses today love the feeling of control over their own entertainment no doubt

May the 4th be with you 🙏 I’m so stubborn Jude when it comes to streaming services. I just can’t bring myself to subscribe to any of them as I feel they are what has destroyed the industry. Should I rethink this ? SoundCloud is pretty benign it’s it? What if I just build playlists there…do I actually have to play the playlist for it to help? I have my own server that I host an open source platform named Jellyfin on. I take all the albums I own and convert them to flac and have them up on my own cloud. I really need some tips on how to help artists like you out without subscriptions to Spotify and the like. Am I off my rocker? 😎❤️

At this point the cat is out of the bag and far, far away. People aren’t in the mood much for hearing 5 songs from one artist, then turning the record over or putting a new one on. Same with CD’s tho I read somewhere they are gaining momentum again. But these are just trends. We want to binge watch our TV shows and have the entire music world at our fingertips.

I’m putting together a record of all the tracks that haven’t made it to albums, alongside some unheard demos etc. Thanks Angelo-

This is actually great information for an artist. I have no freakin idea what the hell I’m doing since jumping back into the fray. Quite a bit happened during my 20 year sabbatical, imagine that, progress. Spending these past 9 months writing like the under study bard and “mastering” Logic Pro has me begging for mercy. It’s overwhelming, at times, to consider what needs to be done once the new material is ready. But if you can’t stand the heat, ….right? If that’s not enough, look at the numbers of artists introducing new material every day. The market has been consumed by the Swirling Eddie that includes great tracks to, what the hell is that, to this bizarre and repugnant trend of purchasing “Beats”. Apologies for my editorial rise in blood pressure. So I recently took on this mental assignment,“what’s the point?” Good question, and for everyone the answer is their own struggle, or maybe not a struggle at all. “The point, Greg, RN,” is that I am compelled to do so. I aspire to nothing more than this, create the best possible music I am capable of producing, regardless of who, what, where, when, how, or why anyone listens. (Not applicable to my wife and daughter as they are contractually obliged to indulge every single mix I come out of the studio holding). Thanks for going the extra mile and including people like my sort under your umbrella of independent artists. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels that way.

madness interpretation 1.i have not mastered Logic Pro. 2.Swirling Eddie, a force of nature and a band. 3.Beats-fully produced, completed tracks missing lyrics and vocals for sale on the interweb. I may be leaving something out. 4. Greg RN- an obscure reference to Meet the Parents.
Off I go, thanks again for your efforts, Rock On Brother, indeed!

Making great music from scratch with a DAW is no easy task. People who complain about ‘computerized music’ often get the response, ‘really… try it sometime!’. It’s like any other art. Making life out of something that has no life until you put yours into it is much like drawing or painting. I love the process.
